52Frames Weekly Photo Challenge – 2021
Week 2 “Leading Lines”
2021’s 52Frames challenge for week 2 is leading lines. Here are a couple shots from this evening to illustrate the theme. In short, leading lines are visual cues within an image that lead the viewer’s eye to the photographer’s desired subject or focal point.
I asked Harper if she wanted to model for me for the shoot, and naturally, she went right into her poses. Some were cutesy shots with her smiling/laughing and looking straight at the camera (as seen in the image below). I had originally edited that one with the intention of submitting, but then doing a double-take through the other shots, I noticed the one featured above which I found to be much stronger…more of a candid portrait (definitely some story to it wondering what she’s thinking and/or looking out at), and less of a “say cheese” kinda pic.
Regarding the “cell phone” in her hand, it was actually a small remote that controlled LED lights we strung on our front porch back during Halloween. When we opened up the shutters to stage the leading lines shot, two of those remotes were still sitting in the window sill, so she picked one up and began fiddling with it. It provided her a natural distraction from the camera, which led to the shot I ended up submitting.
I debated whether or not the remote posed a visual distraction in the image. Ultimately I decided to crop enough to minimize it without removing it altogether, since that would just be too much of the image lost. If this were a more planned shot, it definitely would have been removed for the photo, but I’m not sure I even noticed she was holding it in real time while photographing.
Below is the additional image I considered for submission.
Next week’s 52Frames’ photography theme is “Get Low”.
